ROADTRIP

Gavin followed his Uncle’s truck in Larson’s mid-life crisis car. He would normally have jumped at the chance to drive a sports car like Larson’s, but under the circumstances, the ten-minute drive down Route Nine to the quarry seemed like it took an hour. It was dark and he nearly drove off the cliff of the quarry into the dark waters below. His uncle had swung his truck sideways near the edge, his red taillights leaving a serpent tail of red light his wheels throwing up dust, and Gavin had thought that he had another thirty feet to spare. His Uncle hollered snapping him out of his white-knuckled daze.

“Whoa!”

Uncle John hollered as he jumped in front of the car, both hands extended forward as if to physically stop the car himself, from the look of his forearms he very well may have been able to. Gavin jammed on the brakes and yanked the wheel to the left, gravel crunching and flying through the night and clanking against the side of his Uncle’s truck.

“Simmer down, Gav!”

Gavin exhaled heavily and slumped his head forward as though reaching his destination had allowed some form of torment to cease. He had been driving with a dead body in the trunk, so his tension was responded to with compassion by his Uncle.

“We can’t leave the good doctor in the trunk,” John spoke in a kind but teasing tone. “It won’t look like much of an accident with him locked in the trunk.”

John moved to the back of the vehicle. He yelled for Gavin to pop the trunk. Gavin’s hands were still gripping the wheel like a vice. He heard his Uncle but couldn’t reply. His mind told his body to move, to respond but nothing happened. His Uncle reached down the side of the driver’s seat and popped the latch himself. He then opened the door and gave Gavin an upward tug under the arm. Gavin slowly became aware of standing up and the daze he was in seemed to slowly dissipate like mist.

“Come on there, big fella’. Let’s get this over with.” John led Gavin around to the trunk. Facing them curled into a fetal position, was the body of Dr. Larson. His dead eyes stared back at them. His mouth was gaping in an exaggerated silent scream, and dark runnels of blood slithered from the corners of his lower lip. They hoisted him out and propped him behind the wheel. John told Gavin to leave the car running. Gavin watched as he walked to his truck and came back with the biggest sledgehammer he had ever seen.

“That a twenty-pounder?” Gavin asked.

“Yup, I’ve had this beauty for years.”

John smashed the driver’s side light out. Then the hood got a couple whacks and the fender above the wheel. He then proceeded to smash a large piece of rubble near the edge of the cliff. He must have felt Gavin’s questioning glance.

“So, they think he crashed!”

“Oh…good thinking.”

They rolled the car backward and lined it up. John motioned for Gavin to step back.
